VFW: A Night That Will Live in Infamy

World War II is an appropriately popular topic at the VFW and tonight we focused on its battles. The victors of tonight's battle even had an appropriate name: The B52s. Nipping on their wings were I'll Have the Roast Beef Sandwich with Gravy and Baked Beans as My Side and the Brooklyn Dodgers. Those two teams engaged in a dogfight between Brian and Matt, with Brian going down in flames. The troops of Trivia at 8 fought a ground war with another pair of tying squads: K-B and Team Chris. We're Here for the Beer swept into seventh place and are going with Home Improvement as the theme for next week.

Bube's: The Sky Is Falling!

A rain of foodstuffs from above forced Quietly Making Noise to move into the other room and the feng shui must have been more favorable as they took tonight's top prize. The Tony Danza Slap was the biggest comeback of the night, as they took the silver. My Nutsack Is Like the Oscar: Gold-Plated, 8.5 Pounds and Shaven (And Is Only Shown Once a Year) was third. In honor of Mardis Gras, we had several holiday-themed questions and I gave away a $40 fiber optic Halloween Tree (what?)
The Slap has been mired near the bottom recently, but broke free to place second.

Team Hexy lucked out with some hopefully-salmonella-free Peanut Butter Kandy Kakes.

The Carnies are displaying their Carnie hands.

Kathy and Dave are going with the National Lampoon Vacation movies as next week's theme.

The Cogitators are on the move, advancing out of their traditional seventh place spot to fourth.

Little known facts about your fellow competitors: Marie apparently dreams of doing it with Siamese Twins. (And by "it," I don't mean playing trivia.)

Just Add Milk named themselves after their newest member, Puddy McPudderston.

Ed and Ross changed their name to Half of You Can't Fix Stupid.

Laura's head erupted into a shower of sparks when she opened the grand prize of a fiber optic Halloween Tree (courtesy of Tina Grove).

Chuckles: Adult Trivia

It was a special night of non-Oscar questions with new adult Aimee's team giving her the best trivia birthday present of all. They won the night, two questions ahead of Ubersmack. Every one else was pretty much done in by a rough last round. Slick Freddy finally woke up and took third, two points ahead of the Zomettes. A little farther back was Making Magik and Prius, while a newly renamed We're Right - The Questions Are Wrong placed seventh. They are going with the original British version of the Office as next week's theme.

Slick Freddy and the Usual Suspects were the comeback kids of the night, leaping from 6th to 3rd.

It was a battle of the sexes when the Zombies split into two geder-based teams. The Zomettes beat their male counterparts by 15 points (not that anyone's counting). They also took home some foul-smelling cranberry horseradish. Yum!

Jess Johnson was surprised by the crowd's serenade.

The Miami Blades, complete with delicious Funfetti cake.

The Tidy Bowlers always win the prize for most enthusiastic team.

The Twin Roses missed out on the racecar brownies and settled for some chocolate creme Cakesters.

VFW: Who Needs Dee and Paul?

The B52s celebrate their last round, when they came from behind to place second. But there was no stopping Chicks and Dicks, who got 8 out of 10 right in the last round. (I also found out the origin of the Chicks' name, and it's not what you might think). We're Here for the Beer continued their winning streak, placing third. D&M placed seventh and are going with World War II battles for next week's theme.

The night began with a musical serenade to Birthday Boy Dennis.

Steve's comedy is inspired by Steve.

Matt of Team Matt, placed fourth, despite the fact that he missed the first round.

Karen and Bob had an off night, even though they were the only team to have seen The Edge.

This brand new team went three for three in the Trashbag of Deelite, winning Snickerdoodles, Swiss Rolls and some Special K bars to make up for all the sweets.

Bube's: The Hunt Is On

Photohunt was a new team tonight that had a great time. They named themselves in honor of teammate Don's astounding ability to blaze through screen after screen of the video game, which he did after the show. Hopefully he can make it to the world championships in Europe. Another champion was the Toxic Olives, who leapt from fifth to first, ahead of Pants Party and We Can't Wait for the Benefits of the Stimulus Bill to Kick In for Our Nutsack.

Marie is attempting to photobomb Pants Party's silver-medal-winning victory shot.

Papa Sack, kickin' it old school.

Every Sack Has Its Nut was doing well until the last round.

You Can't Fix Stupid added some extra firepower tonight.

Anne's team, the Cogitators, once again got theme choice. They were going to go with opera, but changed it to David Lynch movies instead. And Eraserheads rejoiced.

Suck It, Trebek! is looking forward to their cranberry horseradish sauce.

Chubbie McBonerston is shocked, I tell you, shocked!

Chuckles: When Worlds Collide

In the ultimate cross-over, several VFW teams played at Chuckles as the President's Day holiday brought out a packed house of 24 teams. It ended in a tie-breaker between My Stimulus Package Is Bigger Than Yours and Ubersmack. Deric, champion Jack-offer™, bested Matt. We also had a tie between The Twin Roses and Out of the Vortex and the Twin Roses (see below), with the Roses victorious. Of Pixie Stix and Whirly-Jeans was only one point behind in fifth, followed by a brand-new team, the Bald and the Beautiful. Team C.H.U.D. once again got the theme-picking slot and they are going with competitive eating.

Suzie missed out on this after-show pic of the Twin Roses.

Dave's Not Here changed their name to Dave Is Here, but they should have changed their name to Dave Is Irrelevant.

I'm not exactly sure what Alan and Trish are doing.

Happy Valentine's Day Weekend!

May you be more lucky in love than Raph Wiggum. (and thanks to Chris for the above image).

VFW: Get Along, Little Doggies.

Not-Matt, Matt and Matt (AKA The Friends of Walter Sobdrak) were in shock that they won the special Movie Cowboy night of trivia, squeaking by the theme-picking We're Here for the Beer, who had their best night in a while (despite not getting two of the cowboy questions). The B52s recruited Barry and placed third, right ahead of Mixed Trivia @ 8. Wally and Steve played as No Chicks until the yodelling Carmen showed up and they placed fifth, one point ahead of Karen and Bob. That gave the theme choice for next week to Giggles and Friends. Mark, who is into hopeless causes, chose the Chicago Cubs.

Bube's: Quietly Making Waves

Brian and Vanessa of Quietly Making Noise had a fantastic day as they bought their first house and won first place at Bube's. And, most importantly, Brian won a 1998 Phil Collins t-shirt from the Trashbag of Deelite! The Most Beautiful Nutsack in the Room was second and Linuscratchitt was only one question behind. One point behind them was the Tony Danza Slap, who beat the Toxic Olives by one point. A new duo, The Slack-jawed Yokels was in sixth followed by another new team, the Cogitators.

Beer connoisseur Bill joined the Toxic Olives for the last round.

Anne's team, the Cogitators scored some whirlygigs and theme choice for next week: Bret Michaels.

The Obama Lamas, with the Nutsacks dangling in the background.

The Tony Danza Slap was safely settled in their favorite fourth place.

Which one was the Wackadoodle?

Last week they were Who the Hell Is Gary Oldman? and now they are My Couch Pulls Out, But I Don't.

It's J and J of J-Squared!

Recommended Music

After our comedy show at Bube's Friday night, I had the pleasure of listening to the duo of Ben Young and Dan Kirby (AKA Tribes of Israel). They're definitely worth checking out. They'll be playing at Lancaster Dispensing Company on Feb. 28th, so maybe I'll see you then. You can listen to them on their MySpace pages:

The Amazing Rosalyn!

Talent runs in our family. My sister sent me a link to all 701 pictures of my niece's wedding. Here Roz is showing her poise by balancing a hanger on her head.

Chuckles: Welcome Back!

It was good to see everyone back again after last week's small show (apparently there was some kind of athletic competition on the television). Out of the Vortex won the first round, but then their arch-rivals Skirtland (above, doing a victory dance) led the rest of the evening, taking home the gold. A second-guessing Ubersmack came in second, one point ahead of the Pixie Stix. They were, in turn only one point ahead of We Will Win... With Tickets, who came on strong in the last round. The Miami Blades were only one question away from second, but settled for fifth, one point ahead of Bill and Marge. That gave theme choice to Team C.H.U.D., who are going with the classic Charles Bronson Death Wish movies as their pick.
