This is a caricature by an artist named Emily that I had done at Millersville's homecoming recently. (Have fun making sense of that badly written sentence!) Props to Steve DiGuiseppe for hiring the talented Emily.

Lititz VFW

The dynamic duo of Cindy and Sheila were awarded the Point Per Persons (or the Pee Pee-Pee) award of a box of peanut butter tandy cakes for their stellar performance. They also placed fourth and chose their old standbys of cars and medicine as next week's themes. Sheila also won a beanie baby vampire teddy bear (which only goes to show that beanie babies were getting despearte for ideas). We welcomed back Mayor Theodore and we learned, despite Tom and Dennis' more colorful suggestion, what the state pie of Massachusetts is. And I forgot to wish Nikk a happy birthday, so we'll make that the first order of business for next week (of course, I'll forget again).

Program note: the Wednesday before Thanksgiving (Nov. 23rd), trivia will be an hour earlier, beginnning at 7 P.M.

Bube's Brewery, Nov. 8th

It was a wild, see-sawing night as teams rose and fell like crashing waves. Leigh was sure that the Tesla Death Rays were doomed, but they got 8 out of 10 right in the last round and claimed the crown. TDC was second and Terrell Owens Is Not Worthy to Lick the Salt from My Nutsack got third. The Axis of Evil (AKA Dead Bear Baby in a Jar) got to pick next week's themes: the TV show Arrested Development and superhero hangouts.
The Fool Monkey was joined by stuffed animal fancier Tim.
A compact version of Dead Bear Baby in a Jar debuted their new moniker: The Axis of Evil.
The appropriately named Two Guys at the Bar had an early lead.
Half of Team Discovery Channel wonders where the other half went.
The Outsiders had a friendly rivalry all night long with the Birthday Bitches.
The photogenic Nutsacks.
B is for Brian the Birthday Boy, who celebrated his 36th at BuBe's Brewery.
Mixmaster Marshall.
Laura and I practice our Guinness commercial.
Derek attempts to play an extremely tiny version of that game that Junior Achievement is always trying to get you to buy.
A premature Victory sign by Dixon and Dana, as the Olives burned out on the last round.

Themes for this week

Okay, once again I've dropped the ball. Here, at last, are this week's themes:

Bube's: Prohibition and the board game Trivial Pursuit.
VFW: TV westerns and sports movies.

Happy Halloween!

Here's my first ever carved pumpkin, done this weekend. (I also had my first corndog this weekend at Millersville's homecoming, so it was an exciting time.) Dressed as Professor Plum (see below) and was one half of Green Eggs and Ham (pic to come). And today it's Happy Hawaiieen, so I got to dress down. All in all, a good Halloween week.

And thanks to the scariest trivia host of all, Chris Ivey for volunteering to substitute. We're back to whatever passes for normal this week. At Bubes, the themes are Laguna Beach and the Ultimate Fighting Championship, two shows of which I know nothing about (FYI: I'm going to limit the themes from here on out so that they should come from two different genres; ie, you can't pick two movie categories or two TV shows -- just for variety's sake); at the VFW it is the pre-picked original Godfather and human sexuality.

Get a Clue!

What do you do when you have a week off from trivia hosting? Why, you become a trivia player, of course. I went to two of Billy Warmth's shows, including his annual Halloween game at Celi's Clubhouse. This is the sixth year that a group of friends and I dressed up as unit. This year we were the suspects from the board game Clue. We won the grand prize for best costume! Woo-hoo!

Counterclockwise from bottom left we have: Professor Plum (me) with the wrench, Mr. Green (Fritz) with the lead pipe, Colonel Mustard (Chris) with the knife, Mrs. White (Lisa) with the revolver, Mrs. Peacock (Sue) with the candlestick and Miss Scarlet (Colette) with the enormous white corded thing.

Chris Ivey's favorite holiday...

.. is Halloween (go figure). Therefore, Chris will be guest-hosting both the Bubes and VFW shows this week. And the themes for Bube's are current events and Halloween, of all things.

Lititz VFW Oct. 18th

The Foreplayers will be sorely missed as they return to the Newmanstown area for the season (snowbirds of a sort). They always enjoy themselves and are a blast to have as contestants. See you in April!

PS: Themes for next week's Halloween show with guest host Chris Ivey are spelling and collegiate team nicknames (as chosen by Room 2; due to a scoring malfunction -- I have to fire the scorekeeper -- Room 2 were the actual 4th placers; Nix Lix will choose the following week's themes).
The B52s enjoy their spot in the corner.
Carmen and Erma do a little dancing between rounds.

Bubes: Themes, We Got Themes

Okay, once again I've been a bad blogger. Bube's themes this week are Notre Dame football and European countries, as chosen by the Wise Men. They tied with the Nutsacks for third but lost the Captain Jack Off contest, the Olives had their best showing in many a moon, taking second and Team Discovery Channel (Boooooo..., I mean yay!) took first.

Theme for VFW Oct. 12th show

This just in: it's 70s sitcoms and presidents. And now, back to your regularly scheduled blog...

Lititz VFW

It was a night of two terrific victories as the Ginny-less Chicks and Dicks team almost aced the last round and had a record 90 point victory. And another record was shattered when the Foreplayers had solo command of the first round. (We won't talk about their fourth round). A duo, Big Foot's Toe took second, followed by Room Two. And in fourth, for the second week, was We're Here for the Beer. Their themes have yet to be determined, so stay tuned to this spot.

Bube's Brewery

I don't have my notes, so I'll have to rely on my memory. (Now that's a scary thought). Let's see... I remember that Team Disocvery Channel came from behind in the fourth to take first place. Second place went to a trio of ladies called the Bartenders. They arrived late, but kicked trivia butt. They also promised to come every week if they got first place. (So maybe, they'll come every other week?). The Homegrown Stoners, with Goombah Cathy and a special non-musical appearance by Damion Wolfe took third. Bill and Marge once again took fourth place, but graciously deferred the theme picks to another team, who chose the US Navy and railroads as next week's picks. Bill's Tuesday show is once again starting up, so we have to say thank you and farewell to the Out of the Vortex team.

Dickvision

We continue our tradition of handing over the camera to one of our regulars. These pix are from September 13th and are taken by Tracy of the Crabby Dicks. A coffee table book of her pictures should be available by Christmas. Thanks Tracy!
Adam asks Janet:"What have you done for me lately?"
Tonight at Bube's: Attack of the Zombies!
Just their luck: the Crabby Dicks had a good round, and now the ceiling's going to fall on them.
A nicely lit shot.
Here we have Tracy getting artsy on us, with an unusual camera angle.

VFW Goings-On

It was the 44th anniversary of Gary's 21st birthday as we all celebrated the blessed event with some chocolate cake, courtesy of the Posse. Cindy's knowledge of Cape May helped her team until the dreaded fourth round. Tom joined NIck in learning how to curse, but his were much more direct. Yvonne reminisced about her days with "Y & Y," back when Curtis Earth did the show at the Holiday Inn. The Room 2/We're Here for the Beer feud took an unusual turn when the Beer team took fourth place. But they get to pick the themes, so watch out next week when it's James Bond and Physics night. Steve has a license to kill, so it's a safe bet that they'll do well in that category. And Joanie may love Chachi, but Cal loves Tuscadera.

The Better Half of Ubersmack

Pictured above are birthday girls Jessica and Melissa of Ubersmack. Their team was too busy celebrating, however to make the winner's circle. That distinction went to Charles and John of the Fool Monkey, who wisely chose themes for this week. The honor of picking next week's themes went to Bill and Marge of Out of the Vortex, who had their highest placement in a while. They chose French literature and the rock group Boston as their themes for next week (Don't let that scare you away, though). The Toxic Olives also had a good week, placing third. In second place (losing first by one measly point) was the Exoricism of Emily Rose's Nutsack. Nutsacker Joanne will be carefully listening to the Rolling Stones concert this weekend (courtesy of her favorite child, Andy). Wipes Lefthanded did extremely well until the end. And we said arriverderci to Dead Bear Baby Adam, who is off to Italy for a three week tour.

Gone to Meet the Chief

Farewell to Don Adams, inventor of the first cell phone and penguin impersonator.

Where Are Our Themes?

Sorry I've been so far behind blogging. I've been busy training the new dishwasher. Bube's themes this week are tennis and meteorology and at the VFW it's cars and Cape May.

Nude Trivia Host

What trivia host with the initials B.W. celebrates a certain milestone this Friday?

What a Croc!

Remember last week's Crocodile vs. Alligator controversy about which has the broader snout? This comes from Animal PLanet:

Alligators have broad U-shaped snouts, whereas crocodiles have narrower V-shaped snouts. There is some variation (for example Mugger crocodiles have a very broad snout like an alligator).

So apparently y'all didn't realize that I was talking about Mugger crocodiles. ;-) My apologies. (I hate it when I'm wrong!)

You Asked For Them, You Got Them

This anonymous post just in: "Dude, you need to post the themes for Bube's tonight! "

They are: Saturday Night Live and the Harry Potter books.

How's that for service? Also coming to a blog near you, Dale's pictures from last week. Stay tuned!

A Wise Guy, huh?

This just in: Shemp died Novenber 23rd, 1955. Curly died Jan. 18th, 1952! Why do I ever doubt myself?

I Never Liked Billy Joel, Anyway

This week I asked "What president is mentioned twice in Billy Joel's We Didn't Start the Fire?" I think every single team at the VFW said JFK. I said it was Richard Nixon. Turns out we were both right (Group hug, everyone!) . I had forgotten about the "payola and Kennedy" line. Luckily this snafu did not affect the winning scores. Santayana goodbye!

Themes for Bubes and the VFW

Boffo beerhound Bob and his team chose Pennsylvania microbreweries and chili (with an "i," not an "e") as next week's themes at Bubes. Meanwhile, Nick and Tom chose the Three Stooges and Motown male groups of the 60s as the themes for the VFW.

Lititz VFW

Tonight we welcomed back the mayor, Theodore Dzubinzkiczyk (or something like that), who once again volunteered to score papers (Ted is always helpful like that). The Ladies' Auxiliaree (or something like that, this computer doesn't have spell-chekc) started the 50/50, which was won by Bert (and I think that was the only winning happening at her table). Chicks and Dicks once again got fourth, but gladly traded it for fourth when Nick and Tom begged to get to pick the themes. (Congrats to Nix Lix for a great fourth round, btw). We're Here for the Heineken, hindered by Matt, took second and Room Two, abetted by Frank and John, got the gold for the second week in a row.

Bube's Brewery

Bad news: The Tuesday after Labor Day is traditionally a light attendance night, and this year was no exception. Good news: The Crabby Dicks had their highest ranking, ever!

Monkey on a Cat's Back

That thing lying on top of the coffee cup used to be a plastic vial of catnip until Oscat went into a drug-induced bender and tried to swallow it whole.

Perfection

Mixmaster J demonstrates the proper way to tap a Guinness (sans that shamrock trick that some do).

Evil Incarnate

Don't let those friendly smiles fool you. Bill and Marge are trivia assassins.

The Demonic Eye of Seth

Team Discovery Channel's size changes more often than Madonna's hairstyle. This night there were four of them (counting J); they tied for fourth and bested the Stone Cutters (I think).

Lititz VFW

It looked like it was going to be a light night, but the crowd arrived in bits and pieces, eventually going full force. The Outlaws' reign of terror ended, but they still managed to take third. We're Here for the Beer nearly aced the picture round to take the crown, beating the hard-charging B-52s by one question. The aforementioned picture round also did in the appropriately named We Need an Old Fart team, who had the misfortune of being the youngest team to compete during 50s Music theme night. Speaking of which, Bert now remembers the difference between Connie Francis and Connie Stevens. Boot, Scoot and Annie won the prize for best team name. Room 2 once again took fourth, and chose spelling and geography as next week's themes. And Nick is going back to her witchy ways, threatening to have a santeria practicing priestess put a hex on me.

Tuesday, August 23, 2005

Bube's Brewery

Details (and maybe a few pix) to come, once I find my answer sheet. In the mean time, bone up on the Lord of the Rings and Poker for next week's competition.

Lititz VFW

We started some new things tonight as we introduced a handicap schedule for large teams. But it was a gleesome threesome known as the Outlaws who took the gold for the second week in a row. We're Here for the Beer bested their farm team (We're Here for the Light Beer) and took second. Chicks and Dicks took the newly prized third position and Room 2 took 4th, choosing 50s music and tools as next week's themes. Ginny enjoyed Purple Rain, while Frank asked what happened to his No Prince request. Cindy and Sheila were temporarily displaced by Nix Lix, but everything returned to status quo. And the world's longest honeymooners had to leave, but Annie and Scoot stayed.

Bube's Brewery

Marshall (Tincture of the Black Dove) and Sarah (Lovely Bubbly Jubblies) showed that the staff at Bube's love it so much that they come there on their day off. Emily, however, is heading back to Philly as the boards of musical theater are calling her back. The Nutsacks were smurfily rolling along in the lead until TDC snuck through in the end and kicked smurf in the third round. The Death Rays and the Fool Monkey had a go at a Captain Jack-off, with the Monkey taking third. The Rays then chose "The Goonies" and "The X-Files" as next week's themes. The Crabby Dicks will be losing the charms of Helen to a Tuesday night class. But we welcomed trivia newcomers the Heavyword Society, a family team of Harrisburg-based poets. Finally, pictured above is some Rapunzel (which makes sense only if you were there).

Tess Exposed

This just in: Tess's website (mentioned in the post below) is called Messy Tessy. (But she cleans up well).

Monday, August 08, 2005

Tess of d'Bubesville

Tess, a Team Discovery Channel alumnus, told her team to kick some trivia ass for her. Tess left a comment on the blog, but neglected to say what her website is, so if you're reading this, Tess, please send it along so we can post your link.

Darth Ivey

Just a reminder that both the Bube's and VFW shows this week will be in the prestidigitating hands of Chris Ivey. (Nice website, btw)

But, Is It Art?

It's been quite a while since I featured any contestant's answer sheet artwork on the website, so I've re-opened the gallery. Here we have Ben and Autumn's birthday greeting to me from late June.

The World According to Adam

Adam from Dead Bear Baby in a Jar took over as cameraman for this week's Bube's show. I was initially worried about what he would do (After all, this is the man who has his own drunken birthday festival known as Adamas). But my fears were unjustified (for the most part). We begin with a nice shot of his teammate Jen.

They Let Anyone in this Joint Nowadays

This strangely-familiar lady charged the stage and ripped into the Trashbag of Deelite, then leapt into her getaway car. Honest! (Mama always told me not to lie.)

Retro Chic

Now we know where Bube's gets their inspiration for their tablecloth patterns! Check out Karen's stylin' pants.

People, People Who Need Trivia...

Beware of the Shirt of the Week! This scary image was on this week's shirt, won by one of the Wise Men.

Whachu Talkin' 'Bout, Willis?

Looks like I'm reconsidering the wisdom of giving Adam the camera.

V for Vasectomy?

With the littlest Nutsack nearby, Shannon gives the victory sign a little prematurely ...

Titanic Trio

...since these three, Bube's Ahoy! (AKA Bonnie's Harem) were the eventual winners.

Josiah and the other Nutsacks always appreciate a good laugh.

He's Everywhere

Like Peter Parker hanging from a web, Adam experimented with unusual camera angles ...

Step Away from the Car!

...played around with close-ups...

You're In the Mind of Adam, Now

And, finally, experimented with the strobe effect. Thanks again Adam, for most of these pictures!

Lititz VFW

It was a fun night of trivia, laughter and extra-large condoms as we explored the world of 80s TV and sex. Scoot stood by his word and got Annie away from the club. Cal knows his dicktators. Carol wanted to know what happened to the spelling questions. Cathy wanted to know what happened to the easy questions. Ginny wanted to know if I could get some Prince music. And Deb wanted to know if I was avoiding her mother as I announced that Chris Ivey will be guest-hosting next week (the themes will be baking and alcohol -- or should that be baking WITH alcohol?).

Tuesday, August 02, 2005

Bube's Brewery

It was a night of see-sawing, as the lead was held first by the Nutsacks (with special guest the Littlest Nutsack), then by the Fool Monkey, and then by the Death Rays. But the Bube's Ahoy team, led by Bonnie, came from out of nowhere to claim the coveted $30 gift certificate. The Toxic Olives also had a great last round and claimed second, the dynamic duo of John and Charles took 3rd, and the Death Rays once again took fourth (they chose Classic Monopoly and Belgian Beer as next week's themes.) The Nepotism Please team, comprised of various members of the Horn clan, were proud to beat the team that missed the first round and the team that left early. Kathy Stone of the infamous Goombas team put in a special aappearance. And Dead Bear Baby Adam (assisted by Jason) was this month's photographer, so stay tuned for his pix.
